February Camp 2018

We are really glad that you’re interested in our camp for your child over the February break. Maybe you are looking for some amazing, unplugged fun, with choices for cooking, creating art and craft, joining in a basketball, tag or circle game, learning camp songs, building a sand castle, acing the monkey bars, pulling out a board game and actually having time and other people to play it, and enjoying the magic of glow toys in the afternoon extended care! And mainly getting a chance to be around a bunch of other amazing kids, making things up as we go along, with friendly, caring, dynamic staff and youth leaders! Or maybe your child will join us as a youth leader to help make all of this happen!

DATES AND  HOURS

February 20-23, 2018 (Tues-Fri)

8:30-3:30 with
Optional Extended Care from
8:00-8:30 and 3:30-6:00

Hours for some youth leader positions are slightly different than camper hours-see below in “Youth Leaders Area” for more details

“We are in midst of doing a school search for our child and the other day he said to me: “Mama, is there a Monkey Business school that I can go to?”

LOCATION

Berkwood Hedge School:
1809 Bancroft Way, Berkeley

Incredible space with outdoor play areas-think sand box, climbing structure and wall, big yard for basketball and other games, swings. And lovely indoor spaces for emergent play and scheduled art and cooking activities.

AGES

There are two groups at Monkey Business Camp:

  • Strawberry Banana Group, ages 4 ½ -6, with up to 27 campers.
  • Mango Coconut Group, ages 7-10, with up to 25 campers.

Additional Info: Youth leaders, usually between 1-3 total, between ages 11-16, join one of the two groups.  All campers hang out together during outside morning free play, lunch, post-lunch play time and afternoon extended care and for Friday afternoon all camper fun. Otherwise, they are with their smaller age groups.

“My child was very enthusiastic each afternoon when I picked him up (and enjoyed telling me all about his day).  He even attended 1 extra day that we hadn’t originally signed up for. It was extremely helpful for my husband and I to be able to maintain our work schedules and know that Ben was happy and in good care with you at Monkey Business.”

ACTIVITIES

What will the kids be up to all day? At the top of this page, we covered a bit about the unplugged and warm, friendly vibe we are always aiming for at camp. There is a real need for kids to have spaces where they can get swept up in the joy of playing, on their own, and with other kids, and they can try their hand at new things. We create the space, you send your kids, and magic happens.

Click on one of the links below to get more of the skinny on what we will actually do during each of the weeks.

Planned Activities for Strawberries and Bananas (Campers ages 4 ½-6) – will be posted by December 15th. See sample schedule here.

Planned Activities for Mangos and Coconuts (Campers ages 7-10) – will be posted by December 15th. See sample schedule here.

“I appreciated that your camp offered a chance for my children to explore lots of interests. They were tired and happy when I picked up too.”

Financial Aid

  • We want our camp to be accessible to all families, as it makes our camp a better place. The budget it takes to run a high quality, award winning camp with thoughtful programming and higher than average teacher pay is high. We have created various options for folks including flexible “no fee” payment plan options at the online payment page, and financial aid available by application. Please apply if you have need, and refer those in your networks who might not realize about this option.
  • It takes a village, so if you have something extra to give to our scholarship fund, round up your tuition on the online registration portal, from $2-$20. Even these small to larger gifts made it so 10 days of camp were available last year to kids who otherwise could not have afforded it. We screen applications for lower incomes to insure your money really going to those who need it.

“Just a quick note that our daughter, Molly LOVED camp with you guys!  Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful experience for her.  We’re planning to budget such that we can send her longer next year.”

LOGISTICS, FAQs AND POLICIES

  • Click on FAQs and Policies links above for more details: the camp daily schedule, refund policy, food allergy information, etc.
  • Campers bring their own lunch and morning snack. We provide PM aftercare fun snack of fruit, veggie, crackers, and cheese and serve some treats in the early afternoon from cooking projects. These are 95% organic, low sugar, with gluten and dairy free options. We are a nut and nut butter free camp, to help keep our campers safe.
  • We require campers to be able to operate within our ratio of 1:9, so if your child has medical, behavioral or emotional needs that will need additional coaching or support, please contact our office, as we might be able to welcome your camper with the support of an aide/coach.
  • A link with camp information will be included in your confirmation, and you will receive via e-mail a final update the Wednesday before camp begins.

“The kids will finally – as a result of making their own granola – eat granola AND they’ll now eat plain instead of sweetened yogurt. Yee-haw!!!”

STAFF

Monkey Business Camp has a wonderful rotating roster of Counseling Staff, many of whom grew up at our camp and want to give back to the campers who attend now. Click here to see bios and photos of our year-round team, many of whom will be joining us. We will send final staffing in our session letter the Wednesday before camp.

YOUTH LEADERS

Check out our youth leader pictorial page here to get a better sense of our program.

We welcome youth leaders to help out at camp! Counselors in Training (CITs) are 11 years and older and either attended as a camper or new to our camp; Junior Counselors (JCs) are former CITs with our camp, age 14 and older, who love being a youth leader.

New to our camp or the Berkwood Hedge site? Attend mandatory Youth Leader orientation tour on Sunday, Dec 17th, from 11:30am-12:30pm at the school. This tour will qualify CIT or JCs new to school break camps to attend the Winter, Feb and Spring Break Camps. We will not have any additional orientation tours until late spring for summer. We hope you are seeing this before the December 17th training!  If you are returning, you are welcome to join us, but it is not required.

Minimum enrollment for youth leaders is 2 days of camp. We appreciate enrollments of more than 2 days and in consecutive order, to provide consistency for the youth leaders, staff and campers.
Single day registration is not an option for Youth Leaders.

“I went to monkey business from age 6-10 and then moved on to be a CIT and JC until two years ago. I am now preparing to leave for college in a month, but I would absolutely love to work as a counselor of some sorts next summer since this camp is very important to me and I want the kids to have as an incredible of an experience as I did.”
