Winter Camp 2017-2018

We are really glad that you’re interested in our camp for your child(ren) this winter season. Maybe you are looking for some amazing, unplugged fun, with choices for cooking, creating art and craft, joining in a basketball, tag or circle game, learning camp songs, building a sand castle, acing the monkey bars, pulling out a board game and actually having time and other people to play it, and enjoying the magic of glow toys in the afternoon extended care! And mainly getting a chance to be around a bunch of other amazing kids, making things up as we go along, with friendly, caring, dynamic staff and youth leaders! Or maybe your child will join us as a youth leader to help make all of this happen!

“I love that the camp feels warm, welcoming, easy, friendly, and open, but at the same time is very well organized. I can’t express how much I appreciated the care and thoughtfulness that went into so much of what you do.”

AGES

There are three groups at Monkey Business Camp:

  • Strawberry Banana Group, ages 4 ½ -6, with up to 27 campers.
  • Mango Coconut Group, ages 7-10, with up to 25 campers.
  • Youth Leaders, ages 11+ who assist staff in making camp tons of fun, and stay with either the Strawberry Banana or Mango Coconut group.

Campers can mix together during outside morning free play, lunch, post-lunch play time and afternoon extended care. Otherwise, they are with their smaller age groups. On days with smaller enrollment (sometimes the day before or after Christmas), we join into one group.

Most of all I loved that there were other great kids, my sometimes shy kid felt comfortable from the minute he arrived, liked staying for aftercare, and was happy and excited when I picked him up.”

ACTIVITIES

What will the kids be up to all day? At the top of this page, we covered a bit about the unplugged and warm, friendly vibe we are always aiming for at camp. There is a real need for kids to have spaces where they can get swept up in the joy of playing, on their own, and with other kids, and they can try their hand at new things. We create the space, you send your kids, and magic happens.

Click on one of the links below to get more of the skinny on what we will actually do during each of the weeks.

Planned Activities for Strawberries and Bananas (Campers ages 4 ½-6) will be posted by November 1st. See sample schedule here.

Planned Activities for Mangos and Coconuts (Campers ages 7-10) will be posted by November 1st. See sample schedule here.

“While this camp is not the cheapest one around, I have seen it be one of the greatest investments I have made. My girls have become more courageous and caring, and I know your camp is a part of that. I also love how diverse your staff is. As a mom of bi-racial Jewish kids, this has been so important to me.”

Financial Aid

  • We want our camp to be accessible to all families, as it makes our camp a better place. The budget it takes to run a high quality, award winning camp with thoughtful programming and higher than average teacher pay is high. We have created various options for folks including flexible “no fee” payment plan options at the online payment page, and financial aid available by application. Please apply if you have need, and refer those in your networks who might not realize about this option.
  • It takes a village, so if you have something extra to give to our scholarship fund, round up your tuition on the online registration portal, from $2-$20. Even these small to larger gifts made it so 10 days of camp were available last year to kids who otherwise could not have afforded it. We screen applications for lower incomes to insure your money really going to those who need it.

LOGISTICS, FAQs AND POLICIES

  • Looking for more answers to your questions? Click on FAQs and Policies links above for refund policy, food allergy information, etc.
  • Campers bring their own lunch and morning snack. We provide PM aftercare fun snack of fruit, veggie, crackers, and cheese and serve some treats in the early afternoon from cooking projects. These are 95% organic, low sugar, with gluten and dairy free options. We are a nut and nut butter free camp, to help keep our campers safe.
  • We require campers to be able to operate within our ratio of 1:9, so if your child has medical, behavioral or emotional needs that will need additional coaching or support, please contact our office, as we might be able to welcome your camper with the support of your aide/coach.
  • A link with camp information will be included in your confirmation, and you will receive via e-mail a final update the Wednesday before camp begins.

“I so appreciated that they offered soy milk option when making ice cream so that my child could participate.  Thank you, as I have not found any other camp that has accommodated my child’s food allergies to this degree.”

STAFF

Monkey Business Camp has a wonderful rotating roster of Counseling Staff, many of whom grew up at our camp and want to give back to the campers who attend now. Click here to see bios and photos of our year-round team, many of whom will be joining us. We will send final staffing in our session letter the Wednesday before camp.

“What I noticed was the friendliness, high energy and creativeness of the staff!”

“Staff is exceptionally friendly – really, really nice!”

YOUTH LEADERS

Check out our youth leader pictorial page here to get a better sense of our program.

We welcome youth leaders to help out at camp! Parents tell us their children love the youth leaders at our camp. The connections make their experience so much more fun and excellent. Counselors in Training (CITs) are 11 years and older and either attended as a camper or are new to our camp; Junior Counselors (JCs) are former CITs with our camp, age 14 and older, who loved being a youth leader.

New to our camp or the Berkwood Hedge site? Attend mandatory Youth Leader orientation tour on Sunday, Dec 17th, from 11:30am-12:30pm at the school. This tour will qualify CIT or JCs new to school break camps to attend the Winter, Feb and Spring Break Camps. We will not have any additional orientation tours until late spring for summer.

Minimum enrollment for youth leaders is 2 days of camp. We appreciate enrollments of more than 2 days and in consecutive order, to provide consistency for the youth leaders, staff and campers.
Single day registration is not an option for Youth Leaders.

“Ben’s experiences as a CIT and JC have really served him well.  Being an only child, he has learned what it is like to be responsible for younger children.  I see the skills he has acquired when we are around young children.  Thank you for all the opportunities you have given him over the years.”
